Breaking Free - Forgotten Children of War

Comune di Reggio Emilia

Breaking Free. We discriminate violence, not people. Testimonies for gender equality and an inclusive society.

In partnership with Cisl Emilia Centrale, the Municipality of Reggio Emilia, as part of the Shaping Fair Cities Project, Iscos presents for the first time in Italy, the exhibition that brings to light the stories of one of the most vulnerable categories of Bosnian society battered by the Bosnian Serbian conflict.

Born from activists of the Forgotten Children of War association (Zaboravljena djeca rata), "Breaking Free" draws inspiration from the stories of mothers and their children born from war rapes; it is the story of battles ignored by the authorities for more than 24 years. These events, which have remained in the shadows under the sign of stigma and discrimination, forcefully claim to come out and tell the darkness they have experienced.

The exhibition took place at Binario 49 in Reggio Emilia, from 26 October to 25 November 2019; the photos were taken by the Franco-Syrian artist Sakher. At the same time as the exhibition, 3 conferences were organized, some of which with the participation of Ajna Jusic, president of Forgotten Children of War, Luca Leone, journalist and expert in Balkan history and figures from the Emilia Romagna trade union world.

The last conference was the occasion for the preview screening of La Pace Fredda, a docufilm linked to the homonymous book by Luca Leone and Andrea Cortesi; stories and testimonies that show how the aftermath of the conflict still divides civil society today.
