Den Flygande Gnistan

Falköping Kommun

Den Flygande Gnistan, is a craft workshop run by Geert van der Vossen.

The company was started in 2015 with the construction of the workshop at home at Grevagården in Broddetorp. In 2016, Geert started small with some objects made of materials that others had thrown in scrap containers.

His material comes from a world that most people do not know. There are a lot of activities going on in old and new industrial buildings where you can not look inside. A hidden world that is sometimes clean and quiet and sometimes dusty, noisy and messy. Large machines are there that are fed sheet metal, metal strips or profiles. They spit out pieces of iron as desired at incredible speed. What is needed is a hole, a certain length or shape to be able to manufacture a product. The rest is called waste or scrap: the unwanted pieces. These are the ones Geert is interested in!

Sometimes it is a bucket full, but more often whole containers. Not many people see value in it apart from the scrap value. To Geert, it's like candy bags, hidden treasures, like opening packages when you're a child.

He does not see scrap, He sees opportunities! The material is namely both the challenge and the inspiration.

The three-dimensional shapes Geert makes, and the patterns he creates, cannot be made with machines. There are no welding robots that can do that. The pieces have been made industrially, with the aim of getting rid of them, and then throwing them away. He works by hand with welding as an aid, with his own produced solar panels, in his small workshop. And gives the iron pieces a new life instead of them being melted down. When the mold is finished, the rust can take over and give them a living patina.

His goal? To make unexpected, unusual three-dimensional shapes with the least possible environmental impact, which make people think, marvel and laugh.
